So onward into the fog it was. And what a fog! Our defroster was not doing a very good job at all. But as we pulled into the first start of the day, we discovered a piece of Ford issued trim on the dash was doing a very good job of blocking hot air getting to the windshield. A quick bit of prying with the old trusty Swiss army knife and the windshield started to clear. And the crew of "Herbert" (no not "Herbie" as Herbert has proven himself to be as tough or even tougher than the movie star Herbie as Herbert does all his own stunts) gave us some Rain X anti-fog. We could see where we were going. And the new notes were starting to make sense. We were actually starting to drive reasonably quick. But with the wet weather, the engine started cutting out. But at service, we found the coil wire was not securely attached. Dick was able to get it properly connected and engine problems went away. The rain continued throughout the day and into the night. But we also continued. At the end, when scores were posted, we found we had finished 3rd in Group 5 for Friday's event and on Saturday, we had moved up one spot to 2nd. Not bad for a first outing with Norbert the Mustang. The drive home was not without drama however. Thursday, in the dry, we had parked the trailer on the grass lawn at John and Sherrie's house. Sunday morning, the lawn was so muddy that our truck got stuck 3 times trying to get hitched up. And it was snowing. Fortunately, John's pickup is 4 wheel drive and he has knobby tires. John was able to pull our truck out and then to get the trailer out to the road.
Once the trailer was hitched up and the car loaded, we headed for home. The snow quit and the sun even came out. We made it home by 8 PM without any drama at all. Makes for a shorter tale but a much happier crew. So on to the next event in Minnesota in a few months.
And for those who have been around rally in Texas and elsewhere for many years, here is the list of our dinner guests, and a special thanks to all of them.
